We visited Magma Cars to look at a Murciélago LP640 in Arancio Atlas. Here is what the car is, who we bought it with, and an example of how a £420,000 supercar like this is actually funded.
What the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 actually is
The LP640 arrived in 2006 as the mid-life rework of the Murciélago, and it changed the car considerably more than the badge suggests. Capacity rose from 6.2 to 6.5 litres, output went to 640 PS (632 bhp), the brakes were uprated, the aerodynamics were revised and the interior was rebuilt. Factory carbon ceramic brakes appeared on the options list for the first time. It ran until 2010, when the Aventador replaced it.
Total Murciélago production across the entire 2001 to 2010 run reached 4,099 cars, with the LP640 accounting for the later portion. Almost all of them left Sant'Agata with the E-gear automated manual. Lamborghini has never published an exact split, but take-up of the six-speed gated manual on late cars is generally understood to have been around five per cent, which is why manual LP640s now occupy a market entirely of their own.
The commercial picture has moved with it. Hagerty reported that its UK and US price guides for the Murciélago rose by roughly a third across the different variants over an eighteen month period, driven by demand for analogue, naturally aspirated supercars. The earliest Murciélagos also reach twenty five years from launch in 2026, bringing them into scope for Lamborghini's Polo Storico historic register.
None of that makes the car an investment, and values can fall as well as rise. But it does explain why the buyer profile has changed, and why funding one now looks a lot less like used car finance and a lot more like asset lending.

The car: a 2008 Murciélago LP640 in Arancio Atlas
This is a 2008 car, supplied new to Singapore, imported into the UK and registered here in August 2020. It is about as well specified as these cars come.
- Arancio Atlas over two-tone Nero and Arancio leather with contrasting Arancio stitching
- Arancio Q-Citura stitching, with branding to the headrests
- Factory carbon ceramic brakes with Arancio painted callipers
- Carbon fibre throughout: steering wheel trim, interior trim, shift paddles, kick plates and engine bay trim
- Transparent engine cover and front lifting system
- Full Larini cat-back exhaust and Hermera alloy wheels
- 19,500 miles, comprehensive service history and an extensive history file with receipts
- Recent major service at Secret Speed including a brand new clutch
- Offered at £420,000, sold with a 12 month warranty
Specification matters more on a car like this than almost anywhere else in the market. A strong original colour, factory carbon ceramics and a full Q-Citura interior widen or narrow the future buyer pool, and that feeds directly into how a funder views the security.
Two details here matter more than the rest. The first is the clutch. E-gear clutch wear is the single biggest known cost on a Murciélago, and it is the first question any serious buyer or underwriter asks. A brand new clutch, recently fitted, takes that question off the table entirely.
The second is the import history. A Singapore-supplied car brought into the UK will always attract more scrutiny than a UK-supplied one, but scrutiny is not the same as a problem. What a funder is actually assessing is the completeness of the file, and this car carries a comprehensive service history with receipts to back it. Paperwork beats postcode.

Magma Cars, and how we work with dealer partners
Magma Cars is an owner-led supercar dealership in Redhill, Surrey, founded by Brad Daws, Piers Hickin and Jack Taylor. Every car is personally sourced, prepared and represented by the owners themselves. That is a rarer model than it sounds, and it is a large part of why we work with them.
We handle the funding, quietly, in the background, so the conversation on the forecourt stays about the car rather than about paperwork.
Which brings us to the numbers. Below is an illustrative hire purchase structure on this car, prepared for a high net worth buyer, showing how a client at this level typically approaches a purchase of this size over a short term.
Example finance structure
How it could look
Hire PurchaseRepresentative example. Figures shown are an illustration only and do not constitute an offer of finance. Finance is subject to status, lender criteria and vehicle availability. A Hire Purchase agreement requires the Final Payment (Balloon) to be made to complete ownership. Arranged through our specialist lending panel. Elev8 Finance is a credit broker, not a lender.
Murciélago LP640 finance: how it could look
Representative example.
The logic reads straight across. A £45,000 deposit leaves £375,000 of credit. The Final Payment (Balloon) is set at the same £375,000, so the twenty four monthly payments service the borrowing rather than repay capital. The result is a monthly cost of £2,780.74 on a £420,000 car, with the capital decision deferred to month 25.
That is the trade. Monthly outlay stays low and liquidity stays intact, which is usually the whole point for this buyer. The cost of that flexibility is a total charge for credit of £66,737.76, and a substantial capital sum falling due at the end. At month 25 the Final Payment (Balloon) can be settled from cash, refinanced onto a new agreement, or cleared by selling or part-exchanging the car. Because no capital is repaid during the term, if the car is worth less than £375,000 at that point, the shortfall sits with the client.
Why hire purchase suits Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 finance
- Ownership. Title passes to you at the end of the agreement. On a car you intend to keep, that matters more than a lower headline payment.
- No mileage or condition conditions. There is no annual mileage cap and no end of term inspection, which suits a low use V12 that might cover 500 miles one year and 3,000 the next.
- Flexibility on structure. Deposit, term and Final Payment (Balloon) can all be adjusted around how you actually intend to own the car.
Personal Contract Purchase is the familiar product for mainstream cars, but it depends on a guaranteed future value set by the lender, and the comparable set for an LP640 is thin. Lease purchase and refinance both have a place too, particularly where a client already owns a car and wants to release capital against it. The product follows the client, not the other way round.
Arranging Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 finance
Cars like this move quickly, and finance is usually the part that slows a deal down. Working through a specialist means the structure is built while the car is still available, and the application goes to a funder with genuine appetite for a fifteen year old V12 Lamborghini rather than one who declines on age alone.
Applications at this level are read by an underwriter, not scored by an algorithm. Complex income, dividends, multiple companies and existing facilities are all normal here. So is a car whose file matters as much as the client's.
Common questions
Murciélago LP640 finance: FAQs
Can you get finance on a Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 in the UK?
Yes. Mainstream lenders often decline cars of this age and value, but specialist asset funders assess the vehicle on its own merits rather than applying a blanket age cap. Hire purchase and lease purchase are both available, and refinance is an option if you already own the car.
What deposit do you need for a Murciélago LP640?
Typically 10 to 20 per cent. In the illustration above, a £45,000 deposit on a £420,000 car sits at just under 11 per cent. A larger deposit generally improves the terms available and gives the funder more comfort on a car with a specialist resale market.
Is hire purchase or PCP better for a Murciélago LP640?
Hire purchase is usually the better fit. PCP depends on a guaranteed future value set by the lender and carries mileage limits and end of term condition standards, none of which suit a low use collector grade supercar. Hire purchase gives ownership at the end with no mileage restriction.
Can you finance a car that is more than fifteen years old?
Yes, through the right funder. Age caps are a mainstream lending policy, not a universal rule. Specialist asset funders look at condition, provenance, specification and market demand, and will lend against a well documented car regardless of registration year.
What is a Final Payment (Balloon)?
It is a lump sum deferred to the end of a hire purchase agreement. Deferring capital reduces the monthly payment during the term. At the end you can settle it, refinance it, or sell the car and settle from the proceeds. Where the Final Payment (Balloon) equals the full amount of credit, no capital is repaid during the term.
How much is a Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 worth?
Values vary widely by transmission, mileage, specification and provenance. E-gear cars and manual cars now trade in effectively separate markets, with the rare factory manual commanding a substantial premium. Hagerty reported its UK and US Murciélago price guides rose by roughly a third across the different variants over an eighteen month period. Values can fall as well as rise.
Do you have to be a high net worth individual to finance a supercar?
Not formally, but lending at this level is underwritten on the strength of the wider financial picture rather than a credit score alone. Most clients funding a car in this bracket have complex income, multiple assets or business interests, which is exactly the profile specialist underwriters are set up to assess.
How quickly can Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 finance be arranged?
Where the client information is ready, a decision can often be reached within one to two working days, with funds released shortly after. Delays almost always come from incomplete vehicle documentation rather than the lending decision itself.
